What are the symptoms of gum disease?

You might not think that gum disease is common, but almost half of all American adults have it. It's almost as easy to treat, especially if oral hygiene neglect is a major factor. Patients can greatly improve their chances of successful treatment with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental cleanings and exams.

Signs of Gum Disease

While periodontal disease is commonly asymptotic, there are signs patients can keep an eye out for. It's important to remember that healthy gums are supposed to be pink and firm, and they should be tight around the teeth. Signs to look for include:

  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Bleeding or bright red gums
  • Bleeding after brushing and flossing
  • Constant bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain while eating or chewing
  • Receding gums that make your teeth look longer
  • New gaps between teeth
